Zygote is lucky that they have such a strong, talented stable of artists with various skill sets and teaching experience.  Please call if you are interested in working with one of the artists for private sessions to work within your extremely busy schedules.  Zygote offers specialty classes for those of you that would like to work closely with a printmaker to learn the technical aspects or make that project you have in mind realized. Matting and Framing Works on Paper with Jamye Jamison

One-day workshop with Jamye Jamison [Associate Paper Conservator at ICA Art Conservation]. Works on paper are inherently fragile. Proper matting and framing can help protect them from damage caused by light, changes in temperature and humidity, insects, dust and other pollutants. This class will review how best to attach paper objects to mats and how to choose the best materials for the job, with an emphasis on conservation grade materials and techniques. This class is perfect for artists, library or gallery staff, and framers–anyone who has to frame works on paper for exhibition or sale.

Print Fringe with a Heavy Intaglio Drift with Christi Birchfield

Come mix it up, Christi-style. Her approach to printmaking is responsive, immediate and painterly. She has a freedom in combining intaglio, wood relief, transfers and other alternative, freestyle processes into her work. Paper litho, Chine Colle, with a heavy intaglio angle.

Pressure Printing with Wendy Partridge

This workshop provides an amazing introduction to Zygote's Vandercook presses. Pressure Printing is an easy breezy, no fuss way to print textural elements and other materials, producing atmospheric prints. The results are like monoprints, but the process is even faster! Students are encouraged to bring lace, stencils, string, tape and other thin + flexible items.

Wood Engraving with a Letterpress Introduction with Eric Gulliver

By its nature wood engraving lends itself to intimate images of exquisite detail and rich in texture and tone. Wood engravings are relief images produced from end grain wood or hard polymer (Resingrave) blocks carved with tools similar to those used for metal engraving. Small editions can be hand-printed, but larger editions can be made on the letterpress.

Intaglio Mix with Anne Kibbe

Mommy-and-Me Monoprinting with Jen Craun + Liz Maugans

This is a two-hour monoprinting session with your mom; all paper/plates/inks included. Intergenerational, all ages and combination duos welcome; come have fun with your mom–we will use water-based inks for smaller kids and oil-based inks for adults. Bring stencils, flat textured elements (like doilies)–or just your mom and some brushes!

Fundamentals of Letterpress: Make Your Own Cards with Wendy Partridge

Over the past several years Zygote Press has acquired some fabulous wood and metal type in large point sizes. This workshop will focus on setting large type to print cards. You will learn to use Zygote's Vandercook cylinder presses, but we will also go over printing on the Chandler and Price platen press as time permits. Over the course of the workshop you will learn the basics of setting type by hand and the mechanics of operating presses in the letterpress studio. Class runs 3 consecutive Sundays: April 22nd, 29th + May 6th from 10am-4pm [with 1/2-hr. lunch break].

Photopolymer Plate Printing with Cathie Bleck + Wendy Partridge

Ever wonder why letterpress printing has become so popular? You can thank these handy photopolymer plates. All the design work can be created on the computer, and the digital files are then be used to make printing plates. Great for printing line drawings, found imagery, complicated layouts, or long texts (where type setting by hand would be difficult). Learn how to produce the necessary files for plate production by Boxcar Press, how to print the plates properly, including operating both the Chandler & Price and the Vandercook presses. Class runs 2 consecutive Sundays: June 3rd + 10th from 10am-4pm [with 1/2-hr. lunch break] 6 student limit, 3 student minimum to run. Registration deadline for this class is May 15th so that we can have plates made before the first session. On registration, participants will receive more information regarding how to set up their files for polymer plates.

These are great ways to access and get comfortable with working with the shop. Combined with memberships these are excellent values [costing only $15 with current or new membership] for the first-timer using Zygote's facilities.

 

Monoprinting Primer with Lisa Schonberg
This primer introduces locations of supplies and equipment, press usage, ink mixing and consistency, modifiers, soaking /blotting paper, basic monoprinting techniques, clean up and print drying methods. Zygote has plexiglass plates for use in various sizes and water-based/oil-based inks available. We are offering two sessions of this primer–pick one!
